About winter season

The following article has been taken from Wikipedia.org. If you are interested to read the full article, please see this entry at Wikipedia.

Introduction:

Winter is one of the four seasons of temperate zones. Calculated astronomically, it begins on the solstice and ends on the equinox. It is the season with the shortest days and the lowest average temperatures. The coldest average temperatures of the season are typically experienced in January in the Northern Hemisphere and in July in the Southern Hemisphere.

Meteorology:

Night-time predominates the winter season, and in some regions it has the highest rate of precipitation as well as prolonged dampness because of permanent snow cover or high precipitation rates coupled with low temperatures, precluding evaporation. Blizzards often develop and cause many transportation delays. A rare meteorological phenomenon encountered during winter is ice fog, which is composed of ice crystals suspended in the air and happening only at very low temperatures, below about -30 °C.

Accumulations of snow and ice are mostly associated with winter in the Northern Hemisphere, due to the large land masses there. In the Southern Hemisphere, the more maritime climate and the relative lack of land south of 40 degrees South makes the winters more mild, and thus snow and ice are less common in inhabited regions of the Southern Hemisphere.

Time span:

It is often said that, astronomically, winter starts with the winter solstice and ends with the vernal equinox. In meteorology, it is by convention counted instead as the whole months of June, July and August in the Southern Hemisphere and December, January and February in the Northern Hemisphere. While in actuality, the most accurate start and end point is simply defined by when the first major wave of cold fronts and warm fronts hit a particular area, having no universally predetermined dates.

What makes me to admire winter season?

I have been housing a deep affection in my heart for winter season since my childhood. Without a doubt, this season is no less than a festival for me that I eagerly wait to arrive and enjoy with great enthusiasm. With the passage of time and getting further experience, I have even developed some very strong as well as peculiar reasons to base my love for winter: I love to shiver in the freezing cold of winter, I love to burden myself with many heavy woollen clothes and above all of them, I find it very alluring to go out for a long walk in dimly-lighted streets in the cold & icy atmosphere of winter.

To sum it up, winter is my most favourite season and it really does not matter to me how odd my reasons may sound. In fact, I still try to search for even more reasons just to admire and enjoy this wonderful season even more.
